It’s time to protect all workers

Right now, one in four workers in Ontario are excluded from workers’ compensation (WSIB) coverage. That means more than 1.5 million workers in our province are not protected—one of the lowest coverage rates of any province or territory in Canada.

Many working families are living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to make ends meet. And yet they and their families will be the ones left behind if they were to suffer an injury at work. Not only that, many of the workers without coverage are women and racialized workers in precarious employment situations. They’re already vulnerable.

It’s time to stop letting the little guy slip through the cracks. Now more than ever, we need universal workers’ compensation to protect all workers.

With universal WSIB, there are real benefits to both taxpayers and the government. Universal coverage reduces the cost to OHIP when workers are injured, and the cost of insurance for employers actually goes down. Multiple economic studies show a real cost benefit to taxpayers. Over $100M goes back to our healthcare system and over $200M is added to Ontario’s economy.
